At the summit in Alaska, Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin held three hours of talks without reaching agreements on key issues related to the war in Ukraine.
Negotiations Without Results
The summit, held at an Air Force base in Anchorage, was the first meeting between the two leaders since 2019. Despite the buildup and the 'Pursuing Peace' backdrop, the discussions yielded no significant outcomes. Trump noted that they had 'many, many points' of agreement but acknowledged the lack of concrete commitments. 'So there’s no deal until there’s a deal,' he remarked.
Zelensky Not Invited
During the summit, Trump was surrounded by top officials, including Marco Rubio and special envoy Steve Witkoff, while Putin came with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov and aide Yury Ushakov. However, the major issue was that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky did not receive an invitation to speak with Putin, raising concerns in Kyiv and European capitals.
Optics and Lack of Concrete Outcomes
While Putin may not have secured a deal, he showcased an image of Russia as a significant player in the international arena by discussing topics with the U.S. president. The summit concluded without any documents signed or tactical resolutions achieved. Trump called for an immediate end to the violence, yet on the following day, a Russian missile struck the Dnipropetrovsk region, resulting in one fatality.
Thus, the Alaska summit failed to yield significant results for ending the conflict in Ukraine. The issue of territorial concessions for Ukraine went unaddressed, and attempts to halt violence did not lead to concrete outcomes.
