U.S. Develops Technology to Track Location of AI Chips to Counter China

The U.S. is intensively working on embedding tracking technologies in AI chips as part of their strategy to prevent illegal exports. This development occurs against a backdrop of growing competition with China in technology.

U.S. Plans for Enhanced Tracking Technologies

Michael Kratsios, the U.S. Science Advisor, stated that the country plans to integrate advanced tracking systems into AI chips. This decision is part of a broader strategy to monitor the movements of technology and prevent its diversion to China. He noted that these measures are seen as crucial for maintaining the competitive edge of American technology in the global market.

China's Response to New Initiatives

China has expressed concern over the alleged surveillance and technologies the U.S. plans to deploy in chips. Just last week, the Chinese cyberspace administration summoned Nvidia representatives to discuss U.S. initiatives. Chinese officials are also worried about semiconductor sanctions that could negatively impact their technology industry, including companies like Huawei.

Charges of Chip Smuggling

Recently, the U.S. charged two Chinese nationals with smuggling Nvidia microchips. The Department of Justice alleges they illegally exported high-end chips to China without the necessary licenses. It has been established that they organized multiple shipments through the California-based company ALX Solutions. If the charges are confirmed, they could face up to 20 years in prison.

The U.S. plans to integrate location tracking technology into artificial intelligence chips highlight the escalating technology competition between the U.S. and China. These measures are aimed at protecting national interests amid increasing pressure from foreign competitors.
