U.S. prosecutors have opposed a petition from former FTX Digital Markets co-CEO Ryan Salame to void his guilty plea related to campaign finance violations. The petition concerned allegations of violations of campaign finance laws.
Charges Against Ryan Salame
Ryan Salame was charged with violations of campaign finance laws and subsequently pleaded guilty, receiving a 7.5-year prison sentence. During his plea negotiations, he claimed that prosecutors implied they would not investigate his partner, Michelle Bond.
Response to the Petition
In an Aug. 26 filing with the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, U.S. prosecutors stated their intention to oppose Salame’s petition in writing by Sept. 4. Salame’s legal team had filed a petition for a writ of error coram nobis, seeking to overturn his plea agreement.
Implications for Michelle Bond
Despite Salame’s claims, on Aug. 22, authorities unsealed an indictment against Michelle Bond, charging her with violations of campaign finance laws during her 2022 campaign for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives. The indictment stated that Salame was misled about the cessation of the investigation in exchange for his guilty plea.
Ryan Salame's petition to void his guilty plea has been opposed by U.S. prosecutors, who intend to continue their investigation into Michelle Bond.
