A new wave of events unfolded in Lagos as several Uber drivers were arrested by the Lagos police while sleeping in their cars at night. The incident, which occurred in the Osapa London area of Lekki, sparked widespread public reaction.

Arrest of Uber Drivers

Late on Tuesday night, September 3, several Uber drivers were detained by the Lagos police during a coordinated raid. The detained were taken to the Lagos State Environmental and Special Offences Enforcement Unit in Oshodi. The following day, the drivers were arraigned in court and granted bail but remain in custody pending the perfection of their bail.

Some members of app-based transport workers, popularly known as Uber or Bolt drivers, were arrested by the Nigerian police task force in Osapa London and surrounding areas for sleeping along the street in their vehicles. They were later charged to court on three counts and have been remanded in Kirikiri correctional center pending their bail.Steven Iwindoye, PRO Lagos chapter AUATON

Link to Prince's Murder

There is speculation that the Uber drivers' arrest might be linked to the investigation into the murder of Lagos prince, Demola Akinloye. Demola, the son of Tijani Akinloye, was murdered in late August while driving near the Bourdilon Court Estate gate. The killers reportedly arrived in an Uber Suzuki S-presso vehicle.

The task force came to Osapa and arrested all the Uber drivers sleeping in their cars. This morning they took them to court. According to the information I heard, it was because of Oba Ajiran’s son that was killed, that an Uber Korope (Uber-Go Suzuki S-presso) was used to attack the prince's vehicle. Now their target is all Uber drivers sleeping on the street.Unnamed driver

Drivers' Reaction

Reports claim the police used tear gas during the raid, causing panic among the drivers. Some drivers posted voice notes describing the incident. The association urges drivers to avoid specific areas until the situation is resolved.

Wherever you are, please run from Osapa. We are being tear-gassed right now and I can’t continue talking. Everyone is coughing. I’m a victim of this. I’m inside the vehicle, where we are going, I don’t know. Where my vehicle is, I don’t know. They have taken it and are driving it away.Unnamed driver

The situation is under control of the police, and the Association of Transport Workers is working to resolve it. Drivers are urged to exercise caution and avoid problematic zones until further notice.
