Uber has announced a 13% increase in fares on the UberX platform in response to the current economic situation.

Uber Fare Increase

Uber has increased fares on the UberX platform by 13% to support drivers amidst rising operational costs. The company, in a message to drivers, emphasized their aim to protect driver earnings in light of the current macroeconomic situation.

Fuel Price Hike and Implications

The fare hike by Uber comes amidst a critical fuel situation in the country. A prolonged fuel scarcity was followed by yet another price increase. Fuel prices surged from about 620 naira to around 905 naira, reflecting a significant 35% increase.

Driver Reactions

Drivers have resorted to saving fuel by turning off air conditioning during rides and negotiating fares directly with passengers. Driver Oyebode noted he has been operating without air conditioning for the past few weeks. Another driver, Ajibola Vincent, mentioned that some drivers are already adjusting their prices to cope with the increased fuel costs.

It remains to be seen how effective the 13% fare increase will be in addressing the challenges faced by Uber drivers amidst the current economic and fuel scarcity situation.
