The UK government has significantly ramped up its investments in artificial intelligence projects, as evidenced by new contract data.
Government Investments in AI
Data compiled by government procurement data provider Tussell shows that the UK government has awarded £573 million ($770 million) for AI-related projects so far in 2025. This amount surpasses the total for 2024, which was £468 million ($628 million), indicating a sharp increase in public sector investment.
Major Contract Winners
This year’s largest award was a £234 million ($314 million) contract to the LGC Group. Other major beneficiaries include Microsoft with £1 billion ($1.34 billion), Palantir at £374 million ($502 million), and Init Innovations in Transportation at £259 million ($347 million). Additional contract winners include Hewlett Packard Enterprise, Kainos, Capgemini, and UiPath.
Criticism and Challenges
The rapid increase in AI investments has drawn criticism, with experts raising concerns about data privacy, particularly regarding Palantir's expanding role in digitizing NHS systems. Amnesty International UK recently criticized the DWP's reliance on AI in welfare reforms, suggesting that some claimants face bureaucratic delays.
The UK government's investments in artificial intelligence signal a push towards modernization and efficiency in public services, but also raise concerns about data security and privacy.
