The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) has announced the launch of a Blockchain Academy aimed at educating the public sector on cryptocurrencies and new technologies.
Goals of the Academy and Partnership
The UNDP announced its partnership with the non-profit Exponential Science Foundation to create the Academy, which will begin its operations next year. The agency states that the Academy will provide specialized education and implementation programs that utilize blockchain and artificial intelligence to help governments achieve transformative change.
Areas of Learning and Technology Implementation
The Academy will focus on educational programs aimed at utilizing blockchain technology to address pressing development challenges. Irena Cerovic, a UNDP team leader for Europe and Central Asia, noted that the academy will allow countries to tackle complex issues, advancing transparency, inclusion, and resilience. Some areas of interest for the Academy include creating trusted digital credentials, enhancing access to financial services and digital payments, and applying blockchain for anti-corruption efforts and tracking carbon credits.
Launch Plans and Previous UN Initiatives
While the UNDP did not specify exact timelines, the Academy is set to launch in some countries starting in 2026, with curriculum design beginning this year. The program will offer training in-person, online, and at forums to provide structured support and create high-impact blockchain initiatives. The previous experience of the UNDP in this area includes launching a blockchain academy in partnership with the Algorand Foundation to train its 22,000 staff.
The launch of the UN Blockchain Academy promises to play a significant role in educating public officials and implementing new technologies that can aid in sustainable development and addressing global challenges.
