Vitalik Buterin Emphasizes Improved Development Standards for Ethereum

Mar 29, 2024

The co-founder of Ethereum, Vitalik Buterin, is advocating for increased standards in the Ethereum ecosystem, focusing on advancements in decentralization. This call for improvement comes after the DenCun upgrade, which reduced transaction costs on Ethereum’s Layer-2 networks. Buterin's recent blog post on March 28 discusses the platform's development path for the upcoming year.

Decentralization as a Key Focus

Buterin notes the transition of Ethereum from rapid innovations at Layer-1 to a concentration on crucial Layer-2 developments. He stresses the importance of enhancing blob capacity and aggregation efficiency, shifting the community's focus from foundational scaling solutions to continuous incremental enhancements. Buterin proposes a stricter definition of rollups by the year's end, requiring projects to achieve at least phase 1 of decentralization to be classified as such.

Phase 1 signifies significant advancements in security and scaling while remaining centralized, reserving full decentralization for phase 2. Currently, only a few Layer-2 projects have reached or surpassed phase 1, with Arbitrum being fully compatible with the Ethereum Virtual Machine.

Future Improvements on the Horizon for Ethereum

Buterin outlines upcoming goals on Ethereum's roadmap, such as implementing data availability sampling to increase blob capacity and optimizing Layer-2 solutions through innovative techniques like data compression and optimistic execution. He envisions a gradual transition to phase 2, where rollups receive robust code support, and interference by a security council is limited to code inconsistencies.

Ethereum is presently in The Surge phase, concentrating on scalability through rollups and data sharding. Future upgrades in The Scourge phase will address censorship resistance, increased decentralization, and protocol risks related to MEV. Developers are urged to align with Ethereum's current vision, incorporating new Layer-2 scaling methods, privacy measures, account abstraction, and community membership proofs to establish a more resilient, sovereign, and decentralized platform.
