The messaging platform WhatsApp has announced several new features aimed at protecting users from scams in both group and individual chats.
Safety Overview Features
WhatsApp is introducing a new safety feature that will notify users about potential scam groups when they are added to such groups by other users. If a user is added to a group that is not in their contacts, a notification will provide information about the group and tips for safety. *'From there, you can exit the group without ever having to look at the chat. If you think you might recognize the group after seeing the safety overview, you can choose to see the chat for more context,'* the WhatsApp statement reads.
New Tools for Individual Chats
WhatsApp is also working on a feature that will alert users if they start a chat with someone not in their contacts. *'We’re exploring ways to caution you when you start a chat with someone not in your contacts by showing you additional context about who you’re messaging so you can make an informed decision,'* the company notes.
Statistics on Removed Accounts
In the first half of the year, WhatsApp removed over 6.8 million accounts linked to fraudulent schemes. The platform noted that many of these accounts were directed at global scam operations that employed various methods to deceive users and extract personal information. WhatsApp warns that scam victims may encounter offers demanding upfront payments, and advises caution when responding to suspicious messages.
The introduction of new security features in WhatsApp reaffirms the company's commitment to protecting users from scams, which is particularly crucial in an era of active online communication.
