Wormhole Protocol’s Airdrop Error Benefits Hackers with Token Allocation

Apr 4, 2024

Within the Solana network, the Wormhole platform mistakenly distributed tokens to hacker-linked accounts during its recent token distribution event. This error was brought to light by a crypto enthusiast named Pland on X, revealing that the Wormhole team failed to exclude these malicious actors' wallets from receiving tokens. As a result, around $38,000 worth of tokens were allocated to compromised addresses.

Immediate Correction of Misallocated Tokens

The hackers in question were previously involved in a major breach, where they obtained 120,000 Ethereum valued at about $323 million. Despite the initial token allocation, swift action was taken to prevent the hackers from benefiting from the airdrop proceeds.

The airdrop of Wormhole’s W tokens has attracted significant attention from the cryptocurrency community, with a transaction volume of $1.25 billion recorded. Although the W token price initially surged to $1.66, it has since shown volatility, stabilizing at $1.21.

Enthusiasm for Airdrops Spreads Across Networks

The successful airdrops on the Solana network have not only been financially lucrative for Web3 enthusiasts but have also positively impacted the price of Solana’s native coin. This enthusiasm has extended to other blockchain platforms, with anticipated airdrops from zkSync and LayerZero generating excitement among crypto communities. Despite concerns about security in the blockchain sector, improved safety measures are boosting investor confidence in digital transactions.
