Zilliqa, the blockchain network, has unveiled its white paper and roadmap for the highly anticipated version 2.0 upgrade set to launch on the mainnet later this year. The upcoming version aims to enhance the platform, offering increased speed, efficiency, and compatibility with other blockchain networks.
Key Upgrades in Zilliqa 2.0
Zilliqa 2.0 is centered around its sharding architecture known as x-shards. This innovative feature empowers businesses and developers to create tailor-made blockchain experiences to suit their specific requirements, empowering users to materialize their visions on the Zilliqa platform. Sharding, a technique utilized in blockchain and database systems, amplifies the performance and scalability of blockchain networks, enhancing efficiency and capacity to process more transactions without compromising speed.
In addition to x-shards, the white paper introduces a new proof-of-stake consensus mechanism, replacing the energy-intensive proof-of-work system. This transition renders the network more eco-friendly, enabling swift finality and heightened security.
Block times are customizable, with the root mainnet shard boasting an average block time of just 2 seconds. The network upgrade also incorporates a cross-chain communication hub, simplifying interactions among x-shards, the Zilliqa mainnet, and other Ethereum Virtual Machine(EVM)-compatible blockchains.
Zilliqa 2.0 is designed to support the Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), facilitating the execution of smart contracts written in languages like Solidity and seamless integration with popular wallets such as MetaMask.
Tokenomics Update and Network Resilience
The network's tokenomics have been revamped to align with the shift to proof-of-stake, offering lucrative and sustainable rewards for token stakers and curtailing inflation to ensure a robust token economy.
Network Challenges and Resilience
The publication of the white paper and roadmap comes on the heels of various operational challenges that affected block production on the Zilliqa mainnet. Despite these disruptions, the network has been fully restored to functionality.
Previously, Zilliqa faced block production interruptions due to technical glitches. Notably, in December 2023, an issue led to a significant drop in daily Zilliqa blockchain transactions, emphasizing the network's commitment to continuous improvement and resilience against operational setbacks.
