In a significant development in the fight against organized crime, Ireland's Criminal Assets Bureau (CAB) has successfully accessed a Bitcoin wallet containing around 500 BTC, valued at approximately 34 million euros. This operation marks a milestone as it is the first successful breach of multiple wallets linked to convicted drug dealer Clifton Collins, and the publication provides the following information:
Europol's Support in Operation
The operation was bolstered by the expertise of Europol's European Cybercrime Centre, which provided crucial technical support and decryption resources. The seized Bitcoin is confirmed to be proceeds of crime, underscoring the ongoing efforts of CAB to dismantle financial networks associated with illegal activities.
Sentencing of Clifton Collins
Clifton Collins, a former beekeeper turned drug dealer, was sentenced to five years in prison for cultivating cannabis and distributing it to criminal organizations. Since 2011, he had been investing his drug profits into Bitcoin, ultimately creating 12 wallets to secure his assets.
Recovery of Illicit Gains
According to CAB's 2023 report, they have successfully recovered 13 million euros from Collins, which includes:
- 89 BTC
- Various other assets
highlighting the agency's commitment to reclaiming illicit gains.
