In a significant crackdown on cryptocurrency-related crime, police in New South Wales have made one of the largest seizures in Australian history, confiscating 523 Bitcoin valued at over 42 million AUD. As stated in the official source, this operation, executed on May 4 in Ingleburn, highlights the growing efforts of law enforcement to combat illicit activities in the digital asset space.

Operation Strike Force Andalusia

The operation was part of Strike Force Andalusia, which was initiated in September 2024 following the identification of a cryptocurrency wallet linked to darknet marketplace activities by the Cybercrime Squad. Detective Superintendent Matt Craft described the seizure as a landmark event in the fight against cybercrime, showcasing the increasing sophistication of police investigations into cryptocurrency-related offenses.

Seizures and Arrests

In addition to the Bitcoin, authorities also seized

  • around 72 grams of cocaine
  • various electronic devices
during the search. A 39-year-old man from Ingleburn was arrested but allegedly refused to provide access to his digital devices, resulting in further charges for money laundering and drug supply. This operation not only reflects the capabilities of law enforcement but also serves as a warning to those engaging in criminal activities involving digital currencies.

The recent seizure of 523 Bitcoin by New South Wales police underscores the ongoing battle against cryptocurrency crime, while a significant security breach involving the US Marshals Service has raised concerns about digital asset management. For more details, see further information.
