In a major enforcement action against electricity theft associated with cryptocurrency mining, Malaysian authorities have apprehended seven individuals suspected of running illegal Bitcoin operations. The publication provides the following information: this crackdown highlights the ongoing battle against illicit activities in the crypto sector.

Arrests in Illegal Mining Operations

The arrests, which took place last August, involved three Malaysians and four foreign nationals, all of whom were detained in separate operations. Police confirmed that none of the suspects had prior criminal records, indicating a concerning trend of new entrants into illegal mining activities.

Seizure of Mining Equipment

During the investigations, authorities seized 52 mining rigs and related equipment, with a total value estimated at RM250,000. This operation is part of a broader effort to combat electricity theft, particularly in Sarawak, where the state utility has reported ongoing issues with mining operators stealing power.

Related Raids and Consequences

In a related raid, officials uncovered two sites that were allegedly siphoning off approximately RM30,000 worth of electricity each month, leading to the confiscation of 120 additional machines. Authorities have reiterated that electricity theft is a serious offense under Section 335 of the Electricity Ordinance, which can result in fines of up to RM100,000 and potential imprisonment.

In contrast to the recent crackdown on illegal Bitcoin operations in Malaysia, North Korean hackers are utilizing sophisticated infiltration tactics to threaten the cryptocurrency industry. For more details, see infiltration strategy.
