Mercari will start accepting Bitcoin payments

Jan 8, 2024

The Japanese digital trading platform Mercari, with over 22 million active users monthly, plans to implement the option of making purchases using Bitcoin by June of this year.

Bitcoin transactions will be conducted through Mercari's Tokyo-based subsidiary, Melcoin. Although prices on Mercari will still be listed in Japanese yen, users will be able to pay for purchases using Bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency.

Melcoin will act as an intermediary, converting Bitcoins into yen for sellers and charging a transaction fee comparable to that used in fiat currency transactions.

In March 2023, Mercari launched its Bitcoin exchange, allowing users to buy Bitcoins directly through the app using funds from their bank account, income from sales, or bonus points earned on the platform.

According to the latest profit and loss report, Mercari, founded in 2013, reported a profit of 2.8 billion yen (approximately 19.4 million dollars) for the third quarter of 2023, significantly exceeding the 555 million yen for the same period the previous year. The company's total revenue for this period was 44.27 billion yen, an 11.2% increase compared to the previous year.
