MoMo Payment Service Bank, a subsidiary of MTN Nigeria, has launched an innovative campus mobility initiative aimed at reducing transportation costs for students at the University of Lagos. This program, in collaboration with Ogata Electric Vehicles, allows students to enjoy significantly discounted bus fares, enhancing their daily commuting experience. The report highlights positive developments indicating that such initiatives can greatly benefit the student community.
New Initiative for Student Transportation
Under the new initiative, students can pay a standard fare of 100 at the bus stop using their MoMo wallet, either through transfer or QR code. Following the payment, they receive a 90 cashback, effectively lowering the cost of each bus trip to just 10. This service operates on key university routes, including the busy stretch between the Main Gate and the campus, making it a convenient option for students.
Alleviating Financial Burdens
MoMo PSB aims to alleviate financial burdens on students, particularly in light of rising transport costs across the country. The organization views the shuttle subsidy as part of its broader mission to make essential services more affordable and accessible for young Nigerians. Additionally, the partnership with Ogata Electric Vehicles enhances MoMo PSB's sustainability efforts, as all shuttle buses are electric, contributing to reduced campus emissions and promoting environmentally friendly transportation.
Encouraging Digital Payments
The initiative not only supports student mobility but also encourages the adoption of digital payments for everyday transactions, aligning with MoMo PSB's long-term goals of financial inclusion. Ogata Electric Vehicles has noted that the integration with MoMo has streamlined operations, eliminating delays and confusion associated with cash payments, thus facilitating quicker loading of buses during peak hours.
Substantial Savings for Frequent Travelers
For students who travel frequently, the new fare structure offers substantial savings, with potential monthly reductions exceeding 7,000. In addition to the transportation initiative, MoMo PSB has introduced discounted data bundles in its app, providing:
- 1GB for 200
- 25GB for 500
further enhancing digital access for young Nigerians.
In a related development, MVL has partnered with Woori Bank Cambodia to create financial products supporting eco-friendly transport initiatives. This collaboration aims to address financial barriers in sustainable transportation, contrasting with MoMo's focus on student mobility. For more details, see financial services.
