The Nigerian telecom industry is set for a significant shake-up as the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has approved licenses for seven new Internet Service Providers (ISPs). According to the official information, this move is expected to enhance competition among telecom operators and improve internet access across the country.
NCC's Regulatory Approval and ISP Licensing
The NCC's regulatory approval is effective from January 1, 2026, to December 31, 2026, bringing the total number of licensed ISPs in Nigeria to 231. This increase in the number of providers is particularly noteworthy as it comes at a time when the demand for internet services is surging, with recent statistics indicating that Nigeria had 14.47 million internet subscribers as of November 2025.
Geographical Distribution of New ISPs
Among the newly licensed ISPs,
- five are based in Lagos, the country's commercial hub
- one is located in Abuja
- one is located in Imo State
This geographical distribution suggests a strategic focus on urban areas where internet demand is likely to be higher, potentially leading to improved service delivery and customer satisfaction.
Impact on Competition and Consumer Benefits
As competition heats up, existing telecom operators will need to innovate and enhance their offerings to retain subscribers. The entry of these new ISPs could lead to better pricing, improved service quality, and expanded coverage, ultimately benefiting consumers across Nigeria.
The Nigerian Federal Government recently announced plans to enhance digital infrastructure at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) by deploying a 30-kilometer fiber optic network, which contrasts with the recent licensing of new ISPs aimed at improving internet access nationwide.
