The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has unveiled its Q4 2025 Network Performance Report, showcasing both advancements and ongoing challenges within the country's telecom sector. While there are positive developments in rural connectivity, significant gaps remain in 5G coverage in major urban centers. The publication provides the following information: the report highlights the need for further investment in infrastructure to bridge these gaps.
Increase in Connectivity Penetration in Rural Areas
According to the report, rural areas have seen an increase in connectivity penetration, which is a promising sign for expanding access to telecommunications. However, the 5G network's coverage in key cities like Lagos and Abuja remains limited, with only 27% and 31% coverage, respectively, indicating a need for further investment and infrastructure development.
Improvement in Download Speeds
In terms of performance, the report notes a substantial improvement in download speeds in remote areas, which have risen to an average of 110 Mbps, up from 85 Mbps a year prior. This enhancement reflects the ongoing efforts to boost internet access and quality across the nation.
NCC's Commitment to Telecommunications Development
The NCC has expressed its commitment to tackling these challenges head-on and has secured pledges from telecom operators to increase their investment levels in 2026. This proactive approach aims to bridge the existing gaps in coverage and enhance the overall performance of Nigeria's telecommunications network.
Globacom has recently announced significant investments to enhance its network infrastructure, aiming to improve reliability and expand coverage across Nigeria. This initiative comes in light of the ongoing challenges highlighted in the NCC's recent report on telecom performance. For more details, see further information.
