OneCoin lawyer sentenced to 10 years in prison

Jan 26, 2024

Mark Scott, a lawyer involved in laundering money through the OneCoin cryptocurrency scheme, was sentenced by a federal judge to 10 years in prison. This decision was made on January 25 after a hearing in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York. Scott was found guilty of conspiracy to commit bank fraud and money laundering in November 2019.

Prosecutors insisted on a minimum sentence of 17 years, while Scott's defense suggested a five-year term. Before sentencing, Scott expressed sympathy for the victims of OneCoin. He worked with OneCoin, laundering funds at the direction of Ruja Ignatova, a co-founder of the crypto firm, who remains at large.

Karl Sebastian Greenwood, another co-founder of OneCoin, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for fraud and money laundering in September 2023 and is required to pay $300 million in compensation to the victims. Irina Dilkinska, former chief compliance officer at OneCoin, pleaded guilty to two counts of criminal charges in November 2023, with her sentencing scheduled for February.

Scott's lawyers announced their intention to file for bail pending appeal. Scott's case is one of many where individuals associated with cryptocurrency companies face criminal prosecution for their alleged role in money laundering or fraudulent schemes.
