OpenSea claims ignorance of ex-executive's role in $60M scam

Oct 9, 2023

OpenSea, the NFT (Nonfungible Token) platform, has stated that they have no knowledge of any proof suggesting a past employee's involvement in the notorious 2021 AnubisDAO rug pull, despite recent allegations on social media.

In a thread from Oct. 6 on X, an anonymous user under the handle NFT Ethics called out OpenSea, inquiring about claims linking their ex-head of ventures, Kevin Pawlak, to the concealed identity "0xSisyphus" and his purported engagement in questionable business activities.

Dear @OpenSea, what do you think of the fact that your Head of Ventures, Kevin Pawlak, has been involved in various very dubious business dealings (e.g. Anubis) and pump & dump schemes under his pseudonymous identity @0xSisyphusNFT Ethics (@NFTethics) October 6, 2023

NFT Ethics, along with the blockchain analytics profile Lookonchain, have claimed that 0xSisyphus, believed to be Pawlak, was instrumental in promoting the AnubisDAO project to potential investors. Shortly after, the project reportedly moved the newly acquired funds to multiple external wallets.

In the thread, NFT Ethics endeavored to detail Pawlak's purported deliberate involvement in the AnubisDAO scandal, alongside other developers, suggesting the proceeds were laundered via the memecoin Pepe (PEPE).

Nonetheless, a representative from OpenSea informed Cointelegraph that they had no knowledge of Pawlak participating in such actions, and emphasized that Pawlak's role at OpenSea was of a "restricted capacity."

Kevin is a former employee who left the company in June of 2023. He had a limited scope while at OpenSea — where he worked in a non-management position. We have no awareness of his involvement with the projects in question.

"Moreover, we are neither connected to nor informed about the mentioned projects, as they transpired before his tenure at OpenSea," stated the company's spokesperson.

In October 2021, AnubisDAO amassed 13,556 ETH, equivalent to $60 million at that period, from cryptocurrency enthusiasts. But merely 20 hours post-collection, the capital was dispersed to various wallet addresses, causing an immediate financial setback for the backers.

Blockchain detective ZachXBT also appeared skeptical about the claims, describing the thread as one of the most "mediocre" he'd come across.

He further commented that a significant portion of the thread seemed to hinge on speculative conclusions about 0xSisyphus' alleged involvement in the scam, drawing on "random events devoid of concrete evidence."

0xSisyphus is believed to have once put up a reward of 1,000 ETH for anyone who could pinpoint the wallet that siphoned the funds. He also liaised with law enforcement agencies in both the US and Hong Kong, casting further skepticism on the recent allegations.
