SpaceX is facing significant hurdles in its efforts to launch Starlink in South Africa, as highlighted by Ryan Goodnight, the company's Senior Director of Market Access and Development. Speaking at the Africa Tech Festival in Cape Town, Goodnight expressed his frustration over the prolonged delays in the policy reform process essential for the satellite internet service's rollout, which could impact the company's future plans, as analysts warn in the report.
Delay in Policy Release
Goodnight pointed out that the final directive of a draft policy, which was issued by Communications Minister Solly Malatsi in May, has still not been released six months later. This delay is proving to be a major bottleneck for Starlink, which is currently struggling to comply with local telecom licensing requirements necessary for its operations in the country.
Impact of Equity Equivalent Policy
He further emphasized the potential impact of the equity equivalent policy, stating that it could significantly transform South Africa and enhance broadband access. However, the existing regulations are obstructing their mission to provide internet access to underserved populations. This leaves many without the connectivity they desperately need.
Novo Nordisk has recently withdrawn from the acquisition bid for Metsera Inc, allowing Pfizer to proceed with its purchase. This strategic decision contrasts with SpaceX's ongoing challenges in launching Starlink in South Africa. For more details, see more.
