The Starknet team has addressed a recent mainnet downtime with a detailed postmortem report, shedding light on the technical issues that led to the disruption. According to the official information, this incident, which occurred on Monday, has raised concerns about network reliability and the importance of robust testing protocols.
Network Downtime Caused by Discrepancy
According to the report, the downtime was caused by a discrepancy in the network state between the blockifier execution layer and the proving layer. This issue stemmed from a specific combination of cross-function calls and variable writes, which ultimately resulted in incorrect transaction execution. Fortunately, the proving layer was able to detect the error, preventing faulty transactions from being committed to the ledger.
Consequences and Future Measures
As a consequence of the incident, a block reorganization took place, leading to the reversion of 18 minutes of network activity. In response to this event, the Starknet team has pledged to enhance its testing procedures and conduct more thorough code audits to mitigate the risk of similar issues occurring in the future.
