In a significant move towards sustainable transportation, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) has launched a project to deploy electric tricycles across public universities in Nigeria. This initiative, which began at the University of Lagos, aims to enhance mobility for students while promoting eco-friendly practices, as stated in the official source.
Introduction of Electric Tricycles
The rollout includes 240 electric tricycles distributed among 12 selected universities, marking a key step in the Federal Government's E-Tricycle Deployment Programme. According to Dr. Tunji Alausa, the Minister of Education, this initiative is designed to provide students with clean, affordable, and reliable transportation options, addressing the growing need for sustainable mobility solutions in educational institutions.
Installation of Solar-Powered Charging Stations
In addition to the tricycles, the project will also see the installation of 12 solar-powered charging stations, ensuring that each university has access to renewable energy for the operation of the E-Tricycles. The Student Union Government at each institution will be responsible for managing the tricycles, setting fares that are affordable for students, and ensuring the project's long-term sustainability.
