Colombian President Gustavo Petro has become the owner of the first cryptocurrency, receiving 100,000 satoshis, which is equivalent to 0.001 BTC. This was reported by former Director of Strategic Development at Blockstream and CEO of JAN3, Samson Mou.
Gustavo Petro emphasized that digital assets have already proven themselves in the world and will continue to develop. He also referred to the cryptocurrency industry as "promising for improving the well-being of the population."
This initiative could be the first step towards the legalization of Bitcoin in the second Latin American country after El Salvador, where a law recognizing Bitcoin as legal tender came into effect in the fall of 2021.
It's worth noting that the Vice President of El Salvador, Felix Ulloa, considered this decision to be an important step in overcoming the economic crisis, stating that the legalization of Bitcoin attracted new investors and contributed to the development of the country's tourism industry.
