Ukraine is taking a significant step towards advancing its technological capabilities with the launch of a national AI project focused on developing a large language model (LLM). This initiative, utilizing Google's Gemma framework, aims to enhance the understanding of local dialects and minority languages, ensuring that the AI is well-suited to the country's diverse linguistic landscape. The analytical report published in the material substantiates the following: this project is expected to foster greater inclusivity and accessibility in technology for all Ukrainians.
Project Overview
The project will initially leverage Google's infrastructure for training purposes, with plans to transition to local servers in the future. This shift will enable Ukraine to maintain full control over the AI systems that will be accessible to its citizens, fostering a sense of ownership and security in the technology. The decision to collaborate with Google came after a comprehensive evaluation of various models, including Meta's LLaMA and France's Mistral, highlighting Ukraine's commitment to selecting the best resources for its needs.
Military Applications
In addition to enhancing civilian applications, the new language model is expected to play a crucial role in military operations, further integrating AI into military management systems. The Ukrainian military has already begun utilizing AI tools for various tasks, and this project aims to expand those capabilities. Furthermore, the initiative addresses existing communication gaps in AI systems, particularly in processing dialects from regions such as Odesa Oblast.
Data Collection and Cybersecurity
To ensure the AI comprehensively understands the Ukrainian context and terminology, data is being collected from over 90 government institutions. However, officials are aware of potential cyber threats that may arise upon the model's release and are proactively preparing defenses to safeguard against possible attacks.
