The UK's National Crime Agency (NCA) has uncovered a significant money laundering operation involving a small bank in Kyrgyzstan, raising concerns about the use of cryptocurrency in facilitating drug-related financial crimes. As emphasized in the official statement, this revelation highlights the growing intersection of traditional banking and digital currencies in illicit activities.

NCA Investigation Targets Keremet Bank

The NCA's investigation has identified Keremet Bank in Bishkek as a key player in a network that is laundering drug money from the UK through cryptocurrency. Last year, a company named Altair Holding acquired a 75% stake in the bank, which is linked to a Ukrainian national currently under U.S. sanctions. This connection raises serious questions about the bank's operations and its role in the global money laundering landscape.

Extent of Money Laundering Activities

The agency's findings indicate that this network has been laundering funds for cybercriminals and drug dealers operating in at least 28 cities across the UK. To date, the NCA has seized over 25 million pounds in illicit funds and has made 128 arrests in connection with this investigation, showcasing the extensive reach and impact of the laundering activities. The case underscores the challenges law enforcement faces in combating the use of cryptocurrency for illegal purposes.

In a notable legal case, William "Bill" Hill, co-founder of Samourai Wallet, was sentenced to four years in prison for operating an unlicensed money transmission service, highlighting the regulatory challenges in the cryptocurrency sector. This follows the recent NCA investigation into money laundering activities involving a Kyrgyz bank. For more details, see read more.
