In a significant move to curb illicit financial activities, the US Treasury has imposed sanctions on BitBank, an Iranian cryptocurrency exchange. This action is part of a broader initiative known as Operation Economic Outcast, which targets the financial networks supporting the Iranian regime. According to the assessment of specialists presented in the publication, these sanctions are expected to have a substantial impact on the operations of the exchange.
OFAC Reveals BitBank's Role in Bitcoin Transactions
The Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) revealed that BitBank played a crucial role in facilitating Bitcoin transactions for shipping companies operating in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. Between June and July, the exchange reportedly enabled the transfer of hundreds of millions of dollars in Bitcoin to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), a designated terrorist organization.
Sanctions Targeting Individuals and Entities
In addition to BitBank, the sanctions also target the following individuals and entities:
- Babak Zanjani, the financier behind the exchange
- Other related entities
Consequences of the Sanctions
As a consequence of these sanctions, US assets owned by these individuals are now blocked. Furthermore, non-US companies that engage with them may face secondary sanctions, highlighting the US government's commitment to disrupting financial support for the Iranian regime.
As the US Treasury imposes sanctions on BitBank, the conflict in Iran has led to a surge in cryptocurrency adoption for financial security. For more details, see the full report on this trend here.
