User Acquires CrypToadz NFT for $1.6 Million

Oct 10, 2023

A non-fungible token (NFT) from the CrypToadz collection, typically valued at no more than $1000 on average, was recently purchased for a remarkable 1,055 Wrapped Ethereum (WETH), equivalent to a staggering $1.6 million.

The transaction took place on the OpenSea marketplace on October 9th. The NFT in question symbolizes "a diminutive, bumpy-skinned, aquatic creature," one among the 6969 units crafted by the anonymous digital artist known as Gremplin. The CrypToadz collection was introduced during the NFT frenzy of 2021 and achieved a trading volume exceeding 12,000 ETH (equivalent to $38 million) within its initial ten days on the market.

The purchase price of the NFT by an anonymous user has sparked concerns within the community. Just a fortnight ago, this item was bought for 0.95 ETH (approximately $1600) and has now been resold for a price that is a thousandfold higher.

Furthermore, the acquisition was financed through a digital wallet, which has become a component of a series of transactions made anonymous through the Ethereum coin mixing service known as Tornado Cash. On October 5th, the new proprietor of the CrypToadz NFT received a sum of 1,115.9 ETH, equivalent to $1.6 million.

While some Twitter users leaned towards characterizing this unusual purchase as a "fat finger mistake" during the transaction, it could potentially serve as an illustration of wash trading—a strategy employed to legitimize funds of dubious origin by routing them through an intricate series of deals and exchanges.

Tornado Cash has gained notoriety for being a favored choice among individuals looking to obscure the origins of their funds. In August 2023, the United States Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) took the unprecedented step of imposing sanctions on this cryptocurrency mixer due to its alleged involvement in laundering illicitly acquired funds. Nevertheless, these sanctions have not completely curtailed the mixer's utilization.

For instance, in July 2023, an individual managed to move approximately $60 million worth of Ether, which had been stolen from AnubisDAO two years prior, using Tornado Cash. This person divided and transferred the 13,556 ETH through a series of 100 ETH transactions.
