The President of the Crypto Economy Organisation has stated that while members of the crypto community celebrate January 3rd as Bitcoin's birthday, from a technical standpoint, this is incorrect.
Vytautas Kašėta explains: January 3, 2009, is not the actual birthday of the Bitcoin network because on this day, Satoshi Nakamoto created the #0 block of the Bitcoin blockchain, known as Genesis. However, this block only served as a starting point for the network's creation, as it did not contain any actual transaction data.
The first block with non-zero content, which was mined on January 9, 2009, symbolizes the real beginning of active transactions on the Bitcoin network, when the blockchain became a functioning means of exchange. This is an important distinction that helps understand the true birth of the Bitcoin blockchain and its subsequent development. While the Genesis block laid the foundations of the network, the creation of the first non-zero block marked the actual start of transactional activity on the network, a fact acknowledged by crypto enthusiasts.
Experts agree that both dates have significant historical importance. However, recognizing January 9th as the "operational birthday" of Bitcoin contributes to a more accurate understanding of the transition of the Bitcoin network from a conceptual project to a functional network.
Earlier, the leadership of the American mining company Marathon Digital assured shareholders of the company's readiness for the changes that the Bitcoin halving will bring in the upcoming year 2024.
