STEPN GO Season 2 is the second season of the Marathon Challenge in FSL's STEPN GO Web3 application, which develops the move-to-earn concept through NFT sneakers, physical activity, and social mechanics. The season launched in 2026 and expanded the format of the first Marathon Challenge with teams, the Team Energy Leaderboard, additional challenges, and an updated Season Pass. Users continue to complete round requirements by walking, jogging, running, and spending Energy in the app. Season 2 is a competitive mode within the broader STEPN GO ecosystem, which also includes GGT and GMT tokens, NFT Sneakers, the Haus System, and other gameplay mechanics.

1. What Is STEPN GO Season 2 and the Marathon Challenge?

STEPN GO is a Web3 lifestyle application developed by FSL, the team behind the original STEPN. Users equip digital NFT Sneakers and can earn in-game assets by walking, jogging, or running outdoors. Compared with the original STEPN, the newer product was designed with a stronger focus on social features, simplified onboarding, and interaction between participants.

STEPN GO was introduced in 2024 and gradually progressed through Alpha and Beta stages. Early versions introduced GGT earning, Energy, Fitness Level, and minting, followed by a decentralized marketplace, the Haus System, Sneaker Lending, and higher-rarity sneaker categories. In 2026, the application remains an evolving product, with its mechanics continuing to receive updates.

Season 2 is part of the Marathon Challenge, a separate seasonal format within STEPN GO. Participants progress through consecutive rounds by meeting specified physical activity requirements. The core daily principle remains in place during the second season: users must spend the required amount of Energy and meet the conditions of each round to continue participating.

Season 2 should not be viewed as an entirely new version of the application or as a separate blockchain game. Instead, it is a new Marathon Challenge cycle built on the existing STEPN GO infrastructure. It uses the same NFT Sneakers, Energy system, and user accounts while adding new competitive and team-based mechanics.

2. Move-to-Earn Gameplay: Energy, NFT Sneakers and GGT Tokens

The core STEPN GO gameplay loop is built around physical activity. A user selects a Sneaker, starts a session, and moves outdoors within the appropriate speed range. Energy determines how much activity can generate in-game results: it is consumed while moving and serves as one of the central resources of the ecosystem.

Sneakers differ by type, quality, level, and attributes. The basic types include Walker, Jogger, Runner, and Trainer, each designed for different speed ranges. Upgrading Sneakers requires GGT, while GMT is also needed at certain progression levels. The maximum level depends on NFT quality: Common Sneakers can reach level 20, while higher-rarity categories have progressively higher limits.

  • NFT Sneakers. The primary in-game asset used during walking and running sessions.
  • Energy. A resource that determines the amount of physical activity recognized by the game system.
  • GGT. The STEPN GO utility token that can be earned through movement and spent within the application.
  • GMT. An FSL ecosystem token required for certain operations and stages of Sneaker progression.
  • Fitness Level. A system that links regular physical activity with user efficiency.
  • Minting. A mechanism for creating new Sneakers when specific requirements are met.
  • Haus System. A social feature that allows owners to provide Sneakers to other users.

GGT earnings are influenced by the Sneaker's type and level, its Efficiency attribute, Energy consumption, and the user's Fitness Level. Earned tokens can then be used to upgrade Sneakers and perform other in-game operations. This creates a recurring cycle between physical activity, resource generation, and subsequent spending.

The Haus System has a separate role in this economy. Owners can invite other participants and provide them with Sneakers through a lending mechanism. This reduces the need for newcomers to purchase an NFT immediately while making social onboarding part of the application's economic model.

3. Teams, Season Pass and Rewards in Season 2

One of the main additions to Marathon Season 2 is the team system. Users can create their own team or join an existing one through the Team Lobby or a dedicated code. A team can include up to 20 participants, and each player can belong to only one team at a time.

Teams compete in the Team Energy Leaderboard. Rankings are determined by the total amount of Energy spent by team members during a round. Season 2 therefore introduces a collective element: an individual user's activity affects not only their personal progress but also the overall position of their team.

Element Role in STEPN GO Season 2
Marathon Challenge A seasonal competition divided into consecutive rounds
Daily Energy A regular activity requirement for continued participation
Teams Groups of up to 20 users
Team Energy Leaderboard Team ranking based on total Energy consumption
Season Pass An additional participation tier with expanded benefits
Marathon Boxes One of the reward types available during seasonal rounds
STEPNathon 2 The season's final challenge featuring 21 km and 42 km distances

The Season Pass provides additional benefits during the season. Announced features include STEPN OG Premium Membership until the end of Season 2, a locked Common Sneaker for eligible participants, additional Marathon Boxes, drops, and specific seasonal items. Having a Season Pass does not replace the requirements of individual rounds: users still need to meet the relevant activity conditions.

The major final event of Season 2 is STEPNathon 2. It features 21 km and 42 km distances that must be completed within a single session. An active Season Pass is required to participate. Successful completion is associated with separate rewards and eligibility for the Genesis raffle, distinguishing the final event from regular seasonal rounds.

4. GGT and GMT Tokens and the Project Economy

The STEPN GO economy uses two main tokens with different functions. GGT, or GO GAME TOKEN, is the utility token used directly within STEPN GO. Users can earn it through physical activity and then spend it on Sneaker progression, minting, and other in-game operations.

GMT has a broader role within the FSL ecosystem. In STEPN GO, it is required at certain stages of Sneaker progression and for other operations defined by the game system. Unlike GGT, GMT circulates beyond a single application and is also used across other products within the FSL ecosystem.

Token burning is an important part of the economic model. Sneaker progression, minting, and other activities require users to spend assets, creating token sinks for the in-game currency. At the same time, the amount of GGT a user can earn depends on Sneaker attributes, Energy, and Fitness Level, meaning results can vary significantly between participants.

NFT Sneakers form another layer of the economy. Their characteristics affect gameplay, while the assets themselves can be traded through the marketplace under the project's applicable rules. When assessing potential returns, users need to consider not only the amount of tokens earned but also Sneaker costs, upgrade expenses, GGT and GMT market prices, and changes to gameplay parameters.

5. Risks and Prospects of STEPN GO Season 2

Season 2 reflects STEPN GO's gradual shift from an individual move-to-earn model toward a more social format. Teams and the shared Energy Leaderboard provide additional incentives for regular activity, while the Marathon Challenge gives participants time-limited objectives rather than focusing exclusively on continuous token earning.

At the same time, the economic results of participation are not fixed. The value of GGT, GMT, and NFTs depends on market conditions, while gameplay rules may be adjusted by the developers. The official STEPN GO whitepaper notes that the project remains in a testing phase and that individual parameters may change. Participants should also consider the cost of digital assets and the specific conditions of seasonal events.

Move-to-earn projects also face the fundamental challenge of maintaining a sustainable economy. Rewards need to be supported by genuine demand for gameplay features, Sneakers, and social services rather than relying primarily on an influx of new users. The development of token sinks, lending, competitions, and additional utility is therefore important to STEPN GO's long-term economic model.

STEPN GO Season 2 expands the application's core concept through team competitions, the Season Pass, and a multi-stage Marathon Challenge. The foundation, however, remains unchanged: physical activity is converted into game progression through Energy, NFT Sneakers, and tokens. The long-term sustainability of this model will depend on user activity, the balance between GGT and GMT, demand for digital assets, and the continued development of STEPN GO's social features.
