Institutional investment in cryptocurrency: $261 million inflows

Nov 7, 2023

As Bitcoin (BTC) hovers around $35,000, fresh capital is streaming into the world of cryptocurrencies. Over the past week, the market saw an influx of $261 million in cryptocurrency investment products.

Institutional investors and larger players often opt for exchange-traded products (ETPs) and trusts to participate in the cryptocurrency market. They prefer these digital investment solutions due to considerations such as regulatory hurdles and accounting complexities, instead of direct cryptocurrency custody.

This recent surge marks the sixth consecutive week of investment in cryptocurrency products. Research conducted by CoinShares reveals that $261 million was added to these products last week, maintaining a streak of positive net flows for six weeks in a row. The cumulative influx over this period reached $767 million, surpassing the $736 million in total inflows recorded for the entire year of 2022.

Of this significant investment activity, Bitcoin claimed the lion's share, with approximately $229 million flowing into the cryptocurrency, accounting for nearly 85% of the total investments. Ethereum (ETH) also witnessed notable inflows, totaling $17.5 million, the highest since August 2022. Conversely, despite its recent impressive price surge, Solana attracted $10.8 million in inflows.

Interestingly, there was a $4.5 million injection into Short Bitcoin products, indicating a certain level of pessimism among some investors concerning the current market conditions.

Several indications point to substantial institutional involvement in the cryptocurrency realm. For instance, BeInCrypto reported on October 24 that daily Bitcoin transactions exceeded the threshold of $100,000, signifying a growing interest among major players in the crypto space.
