**Allegations of Data Breach at Major Crypto Exchange**

May 4, 2024

A data breach at Bitfinex, a major cryptocurrency exchange, has allegedly taken place, affecting a large number of users and leading to the theft of a significant amount of data. The exchange has not yet confirmed these allegations, with the CTO suggesting that the breach might not be accurate.

Concerns Surrounding Bitfinex Data Breach

Shinoji Research reported that the data breach at Bitfinex may have compromised data from around 400,000 users, with 2.5 terabytes of information believed to have been stolen. Despite these claims, Bitfinex has not verified the accuracy of this information. However, Shinoji Research suggested that the FSociety ransomware group could be behind the attack and shared links containing usernames and plaintext passwords.

Speculations on the Validity of Bitfinex Data Leak

In response to the news, Paolo Ardoino, the CEO of Tether and CTO of Bitfinex, released a statement on the X platform. Ardoino raised doubts about the authenticity of the Bitfinex data leak, pointing to the fact that the sample data only includes 22,500 email and password records. Additionally, Bitfinex does not store plaintext passwords, as per Ardoino's statement.
