The launch of the Avail Data Availability Mainnet marked a significant milestone in the blockchain space, accompanied by the introduction of the native AVAIL token. Avail, a project that originated from Polygon in early 2023, has successfully secured $75 million in funding so far. The AVAIL token holds a pivotal role within Avail's ecosystem, serving to cover data availability fees and facilitate network staking.
AVAIL will have a capped total token supply of 10 billion tokens. In a recent move, Avail conducted an airdrop of 600 million AVAIL tokens to diverse participants, including blockchain developers, testnet contributors, and Polygon PoS stakers. This airdrop will become claimable once the Avail Data Availability layer is fully operational.
Addressing the challenges of blockchain fragmentation and scalability, Avail has been meticulously crafted to offer solutions to these pressing issues. The core element of the project, the Avail Data Availability layer, is engineered to efficiently manage the vast volumes of transactional data generated by blockchains, particularly focusing on layer-2 solutions within the Ethereum ecosystem.
At the heart of Avail's technology are KZG commitments and data availability sampling (DAS). These innovative technologies empower Avail to provide a robust data availability infrastructure, effectively tackling critical hurdles within the blockchain landscape.
Avail adopts a Nominated Proof-of-Stake (NPoS) consensus mechanism to ensure the decentralization and fair distribution of staked tokens among validators. Initially targeting 1,000 validators, Avail plans to scale up to 10,000 validators as the network expands. The combination of NPoS with light clients utilizing validity proofs and data availability sampling allows for swift data verification on consumer-grade hardware like mobile devices, bolstering network security and operational efficiency.
Within a competitive arena, Avail positions itself against established players like Celestia and NEAR Protocol's Nuffle Labs. Avail distinguishes itself by being the sole chain-agnostic data availability layer integrating KZG commitments and sampling data availability. This unique amalgamation provides distinctive advantages for rollups, enabling them to operate with capabilities akin to Ethereum's comprehensive Danksharding roadmap.
Looking ahead, Avail envisions a comprehensive ecosystem that includes the Nexus interoperability layer and the Fusion security network layer. These upcoming components are poised to amplify Avail's capabilities and influence within the blockchain realm.
By furnishing reliable data availability infrastructure, Avail aims to bolster the scalability of decentralized blockchains, empowering developers to efficiently build and deploy various blockchain solutions, including rollups. The project's chain-agnostic nature allows for seamless support across different execution environments and rollup structures, expanding its utility across diverse blockchain networks.
