Bitcoin Hits Milestone of 1 Billion Transactions as Dormant BTC Whale Transfers $44 Million

May 6, 2024

The Bitcoin network achieved a significant milestone by processing its one billionth transaction during block 842,241 on May 5. This marked exactly 15 years, 4 months, and 4 days since the network's first block was mined. A BTC address that had been inactive for a decade also made a substantial transfer of over $44 million in Bitcoin on the same day.

The data revealed that Bitcoin has been processing around 178,475 transactions daily since its launch. However, this figure does not account for transactions carried out on the Lightning Network.

The Lightning Network, a prominent layer 2 protocol, managed to process approximately 6.6 million transactions in just August 2023. This data indicates that hundreds of millions of transactions have been executed on the Lightning Network since its inception in early 2018.

Furthermore, there was a surge in daily transactions on the Bitcoin network following the fourth halving event on April 20. During this event, a record high of 926,000 transactions was processed on April 23.

Recently, dormant BTC whales have begun to transfer large amounts of Bitcoin after remaining inactive for a long time. For example, a wallet that had not been used for over a decade moved its entire balance of 687.33 Bitcoins, while another wallet transferred $6 billion worth of Bitcoin in March 2019. These movements come amid positive price action for Bitcoin, which has climbed over 1% in the past 24 hours to reach $64,553.72.
