Bitcoin Miner Achieves Major Reward with 3.125 BTC

Apr 29, 2024

A solo Bitcoin miner has achieved a significant milestone by successfully solving a Bitcoin block independently, resulting in the full reward of 3.125 Bitcoin (BTC).

On April 28, Con Kolivas, a software engineer and administrator from the solo mining pool ckpool, shared the news that a miner had solved the 282nd solo block in Bitcoin's history.

This miner showcased a high hash rate of approximately 120PH (peta hashes) at the time of solving the block, translating to roughly 0.12 EH (exa hashes). Their average hash rate over a week was about 12PH, which represented around 0.02% of the total network hash rate.

The block reward for block 841,286 had recently been halved from 6.25 BTC to 3.125 BTC during the Bitcoin halving event that took place on April 20, resulting in a reward worth approximately $200,000 at the time.

Solving a block solo is an extremely rare occurrence in Bitcoin mining, comparable to winning a lottery. Out of the 841,300 blocks generated since the creation of Bitcoin, solo mining has only happened 282 times.

The competitiveness of Bitcoin mining has risen significantly over time due to increasing prices, leading to a surge in hash rate and difficulty, making it nearly impossible to solve a block independently.

In March 2023, another solo miner received the complete 6.25 BTC reward for solving a block when prices were lower, valuing the reward at around $150,000.

The most recent solo block prior to this event occurred on April 5, where a solo miner solved block 837,814 with a hash rate of 7PH, earning a reward of approximately $422,750 at the time.

The average network hash rate currently stands at 618 EH/s (exa hashes per second), reaching an all-time high of 728 EH/s on April 23. This represents a significant increase of over 90% in the past year, making the latest solo mining achievement even more exceptional.

A notable migration of older Bitcoin mining machines from the United States to overseas locations was recently observed, where they will be refurbished and sold in international markets.
