Bitcoin Reaches a Billion Transactions Milestone

May 6, 2024

Bitcoin has officially processed over one billion transactions. Eight hundred weeks and one day after its launch on January 3, 2009, Bitcoin, the world’s most valuable cryptocurrency, has crossed the threshold of one billion transactions, marking a significant milestone in the cryptosphere. Daily transactions peaked around the fourth halving of the network on April 20, with 926,000 transactions processed on April 23. This spike in demand is largely tied to the Runes protocol launch at block 840,000.

Despite the peak activity, the daily transaction count decreased to 660,260 on May 4. Nonetheless, this achievement symbolizes a new era for Bitcoin, showcasing a consistent rise in transactions over the past year. New protocols like Bitcoin Ordinals and Runes, along with the introduction of Bitcoin ETFs, have contributed to this surge in activity, solidifying positive sentiments toward the popular cryptocurrency.

Ethereum, Bitcoin's competitor, holds the record for processing nearly 2.4 billion transactions since its inception in July 2015. Data from Clark Moody’s Bitcoin dashboard reveals that the Bitcoin network has averaged six transactions per second over the past month, excluding those on the Lightning Network, which focuses primarily on micropayments. The Lightning Network has estimated 6.6 million transactions processed in August 2023, indicating a substantial volume of transactions on this network since its launch in January 2018.

Although Bitcoin's price stands at $63,750, reflecting a 13.6% decrease from its peak of $73,740 on March 13, the milestone of reaching one billion transactions is a noteworthy accomplishment for the cryptocurrency community.
