Concerns Over Ethereum Layer 3 Networks Raised by Polygon CEO

May 9, 2024

In recent statements, Polygon CEO Marc Boiron expressed doubts about the development of Layer 3 (L3) applications within the Ethereum ecosystem. Boiron suggested that these L3 networks could potentially pose security risks for Ethereum by diverting value away from the main network.

Highlighting his concerns, Boiron emphasized that L3 networks present challenges as they do not allow for quick settlements back to Ethereum. He pointed out that such applications are dependent on Layer 2 (L2) networks for processing.

Boiron's remarks come in response to Optimism's announcement of integrating Layer 3 (L3) applications into its OP Stack to enhance blockchain throughput. The initiative aims to attract L3 application developers to build on the OP Stack and receive additional benefits, including revenue-sharing incentives.

Optimism's team outlined specific features to support L3 developers, such as custom gas tokens and "Plasma Mode," which aim to reduce operational costs for Layer 3 networks compared to L2 networks.

Although Boiron questioned the necessity of Layer 3 networks, he acknowledged the freedom in the crypto space for individuals to pursue such projects. He mentioned that neither he nor Polygon Labs would impose restrictions on what developers choose to build.
