Consensys Advocates for Approval of Ethereum's PoS for Spot Ether ETFs

Apr 2, 2024

Following an inquiry by the United States Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) regarding concerns over fraud and manipulation in Ethereum's proof-of-stake (PoS) system, Consensys, a prominent blockchain and Web3 software development firm, defended Ethereum's PoS implementation. Consensys argued that worries about fraud and manipulation are unfounded and highlighted the security advantages of Ethereum's PoS over Bitcoin's proof-of-work (PoW) system.

Consensys outlined features of Ethereum such as quicker block finality, duty splits between proposers and attesters, higher costs for potential attackers, penalties for validator misconduct, and environmental sustainability that contribute to its security. The firm stressed Ethereum's extensive developer community and operation on a transparent public blockchain.

Consensys urged the SEC to acknowledge Ethereum's superior security attributes compared to approved Bitcoin-based ETPs. While spot Bitcoin ETFs have gained attention, uncertainty surrounds the approval of a spot Ether ETF in 2023. The SEC's decision on pending spot ETH ETF applications, starting with VanEck's proposal and due by May 23, remains awaited.

Speculation suggests the SEC might defer its decision to 2024 despite some experts' optimism about approval in 2023. Companies like Fidelity, Hashdex, and ARK 21Shares have spot ETH ETF applications pending, following the SEC's approval of Ether futures-linked investment vehicles in October 2023.

The crypto betting markets are closely monitoring the SEC's decisions, with significant amounts wagered on the spot Ether ETF approvals before May ends. Grayscale, an investment management firm, hopes for a positive verdict from the SEC on spot Ether ETFs by May, despite the SEC approving 11 spot Bitcoin ETFs on January 10. Grayscale's Chief Legal Officer, Craig Salm, noted the SEC's lack of direct engagement with ETF applicants does not indicate the outcome of decisions.
