Crypto Venture Capital Funding Reaches $1 Billion for Second Consecutive Month

May 6, 2024

Topping $1 billion for the second straight month this year, crypto venture capital funding has reached $1.02 billion in April across 161 investment rounds. This figure saw a slight decline from the $1.09 billion recorded in March from 186 rounds, according to RootData. Notably, this marks the first instance of two straight months above $1 billion since October-November 2022.

Among the significant fundraises in April include a $47 million investment into real-world asset tokenization firm Securitize led by BlackRock, and a massive $225 million investment into Monad, a new "Solana killer" layer-1 blockchain supported by Paradigm and Coinbase Ventures. Additionally, blockchain infrastructure startup Auradine and Cosmos-based layer-1 blockchain Berachain received $80 million and $100 million in funding, respectively.

In 2024, blockchain infrastructure companies obtained the most venture capital funding at $1.7 billion, followed by decentralized finance protocols at $626 million. On the other hand, decentralized autonomous organizations received the least funding, totaling $3 million thus far in 2024.

This influx in funding brings the year's total to over $3.67 billion across 604 funding rounds, putting it on track to surpass the $9.3 billion raised in 2023. Since June 2014, over $100 billion has been invested in the blockchain industry, spanning 5,195 funding rounds, as noted by DeFiLlama.

Both VC firms Pantera Capital and Paradigm are currently seeking $1 billion and $850 million, respectively, for their new cryptocurrency funds. If Pantera Capital hits its $1 billion target, it would be the most significant cryptocurrency industry raise since May 2022 when Andreessen Horowitz raised a record-setting $4.5 billion from its Silicon Valley venture capital fund. Interestingly, despite raising $7.2 billion for investments in various technology sectors in May, Andreessen Horowitz decided not to increase its cryptocurrency-focused fund.
