Evolution of Layer-2 Protocols in the Digital Currency Space

The world of digital currencies is witnessing a significant transformation, particularly within the Ethereum ecosystem's associated protocols. Recently, Polygon's cofounder Mihailo Bjelic provided an update indicating a remarkable increase in the total number of users. Notably, the layer-2 scaling solution of Polygon has now surpassed Ethereum in terms of Monthly Active User (MAU) count.

Ethereum vs. Layer-2 Networks

Although Ethereum serves as the foundation for layer-2 scaling solutions, it is facing a decline in growth momentum compared to these secondary protocols. According to Bjelic's data, Polygon's MAU has surged past eight million, exceeding Ethereum's user count, which remains below the eight million mark.

The shift towards Polygon by users is logical. The recent Dencun Upgrade resulted in reduced fees, enhancing the platform's appeal. While Ethereum continues to evolve, the growth of its L2s offers users more opportunities to engage with the Decentralized Finance (DeFi) ecosystem effectively.

In addition to Polygon, protocols like Base and Optimism (OP) are driving significant changes in the network to accommodate a larger user base. With improved performance, scalability, and reduced gas fees, layer-2 protocols now serve as an unparalleled choice for users interested in exploring NFTs, gaming, and other innovations in the Web3 space.

Decline in Layer-2 Ecosystem Valuation

Despite surpassing Ethereum in key metrics, layer-2 protocols and their associated tokens are closely tied to ETH. They are currently affected by a bearish market sentiment.

At present, Ethereum is valued at $3,527.53, reflecting a 4% decrease in the last 24 hours. Following this downturn, L2 tokens like MATIC, Arbitrum (ARB), and Optimism have also experienced declines of 1.74%, 2.44%, and 1.6% respectively.

The Ethereum ecosystem is facing uncertainties, especially with the anticipated launch of the spot ETH ETF product. If this product enters the market, it could potentially boost the value of ETH and associated tokens.
