In a recent incident, a trader lost 1,155 WBTC amounting to $71 million in a Phishing attack. The victim unknowingly sent the massive amount to the hacker due to an address poisoning scam tactic. The hacker, after funding the fake address with $0, began refunding the stolen funds. As of the latest update, around 4,676 ETH valued at $14.2 million has been returned to the victim. It is uncertain whether the refund was due to generosity or a whitehat event where the hacker may receive a bounty.
This act of refunding stolen funds is not unprecedented, with examples like the hacker who returned over $600 million stolen from the DeFi protocol Poly Network. Industry experts emphasize the importance of adopting robust security measures to combat the increasing frequency of scams in the crypto ecosystem, including the use of AI technology to deceive victims.
