James Howells, a British IT worker who accidentally threw out a hard drive containing 8000 bitcoins over a decade ago, continues his search.
The Story of the Lost Hard Drive
Howells made headlines following the 2013 mishap when his hard drive with 8000 bitcoins ended up in a landfill site in Newport, Wales. With the surge in bitcoin prices, the value of his lost fortune has now ballooned to about $915 million.
James Howells's New Plans
Recently, rumors circulated that Howells had given up searching. However, he pushed back against this narrative, stating: 'No, I have not ‘given up’.' He had submitted an offer of between $33 million and $40 million to buy the landfill, which was ignored by the Newport City Council. Instead, he plans to tokenize his legal rights over the bitcoins, which a High Court ruling confirmed still belong to him.
Documentary Project About the Search
In April, media startup Lebul secured exclusive rights to develop documentary content surrounding Howells' efforts. The project titled *The Buried Bitcoin: The Real-Life Treasure Hunt of James Howells* includes a documentary series and a podcast, along with short-form digital content.
James Howells has not given up hope of finding his hard drive with 8000 bitcoins and is now working on a new project to safeguard his rights to the asset.
