Rather than acknowledging John's success in bringing together 75,000 individuals for a common goal, critics focused solely on the choice of cryptocurrency. John Deaton was surprised by the situation, as he believes that government overreach is the same regardless of the asset. Even though he has a significant investment in Bitcoin, he was still labeled as the "XRP attorney" when supporting Ripple holders.

Deaton found it troubling that Bitcoin maximalists attacked him in this way when the core issue should be government overreach. He argued that libertarian principles should guide the fight against such overreach, regardless of personal opinions on specific assets. Deaton was disappointed to see some Bitcoin enthusiasts supporting the SEC's actions against Ripple early on, despite the potential negative impact on the entire cryptocurrency space.

Furthermore, Deaton pointed out the absurdity of considering assets purchased by individuals, like his daughter, as illegal simply because they were unaware of the actions of the underlying company. He stated that such actions should be concerning to libertarians and Bitcoin supporters, no matter their views on XRP or other assets.
