Kenya Mulls Cryptocurrency Mining for Energy Funding

Apr 28, 2024

The President of Kenya, William Ruto, is considering opening up the country's cryptocurrency mining sector to investors to address its energy funding requirements. During the America Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) business summit in Nairobi, President Ruto mentioned engaging in discussions with major American companies, such as Microsoft and Arbor Healthcare, to increase their participation in Kenya.

President Ruto specifically highlighted Marathon Digital's involvement in advising Kenya's national treasury and the ministry of energy on cryptocurrency regulations and energy needs for mining operations. This decision is part of a broader strategy to diversify Kenya's revenue sources beyond traditional sectors like agriculture and tourism, which are affected by external factors like weather and global economic conditions.

Emphasizing Kenya's openness to new investment approaches, President Ruto mentioned the special economic zones program that offers various incentives, including tax exemptions, top-notch infrastructure, streamlined business procedures, supply chain integration, and improved market access for products, making Kenya an appealing investment destination.

This move follows the Kenyan government's efforts earlier in the year to regulate cryptocurrency trading to combat concerns related to money laundering and terrorism financing. These regulations were implemented after Kenya was grey-listed by the Financial Action Task Force (FATF), subjecting the country to increased oversight regarding potential financial crimes.

Exploring cryptocurrency mining provides an innovative opportunity for Kenya to generate additional income and reduce reliance on more unstable revenue sources, ultimately contributing to the stabilization and fortification of the national economy.
