ProShares Introduces Long and Short Options in Bitcoin ETFs

Apr 2, 2024

A significant development occurred in the realm of digital currency with ProShares, a major ETF provider, unveiling a new phase. ProShares has introduced the first-ever ETFs for investors: the ProShares Ultra Bitcoin ETF (BITU) for daily 2x Bitcoin returns and the ProShares UltraShort Bitcoin ETF (SBIT) for daily -2x Bitcoin returns.

As per ProShares CEO Michael L. Sapir, BITU and SBIT aim to simplify leveraged or short-focused Bitcoin transactions, which are typically complex and costly. These ETFs allow investors to pursue amplified Bitcoin returns or take directional bets with reduced capital at stake. Additionally, SBIT enables investors to potentially profit from a decline in Bitcoin's price or hedge against Bitcoin-related risks.

Listed on the New York Stock Exchange, BITU and SBIT are excellent choices for investors interested in leveraged or short-focused Bitcoin strategies, offering the accessibility, convenience, and efficiency of an ETF.

ProShares, a prominent player in leveraged ETFs globally, has expanded its product range by venturing into crypto-related ETFs. Following the launch of the first U.S. Bitcoin-linked ETF (BITO) in October 2021, ProShares introduced various products such as the first U.S. short-focused Bitcoin-linked ETF (BITI), an ETF tracking Ethereum's performance (EETH), and a short-focused Ethereum-linked ETF (SETH).

Additionally, ProShares rolled out ETFs focusing on the combined performance of Bitcoin and Ethereum with equal and market value weightings (BETE and BETH, respectively). It is essential to note that ETFs like BITU and SBIT do not directly invest in cryptocurrencies.

This new endeavor from ProShares coincides with the growing integration between cryptocurrency markets and traditional finance. The introduction of these ETFs offers investors fresh opportunities to expand their access to crypto assets and diversify their investment strategies.
