Tether, a company known for its USDT stablecoin, has announced plans to actively develop its capabilities in Bitcoin mining, allocating up to $10 billion for this purpose.
Expansion into Bitcoin Mining
Paolo Ardoino, CTO of Tether, outlined the company’s plans to expand its presence in Bitcoin mining. Tether is funneling up to $10 billion into digital assets. Ardoino explained that supporting mining operations will help enhance the security of the Bitcoin network, although outright Bitcoin purchases could yield higher returns. Currently, major players such as Marathon Digital, Riot Platforms, and CleanSpark dominate the mining field, controlling around 30% of the total hashrate. Yet Tether has not disclosed its own mining capacity, complicating assessments of its progress.
Freezing Iran-Linked Wallets
Tether has frozen 112 wallets linked to Iran, with the action first noted by analyst Cryptadamist. It’s reported that 40 of the frozen wallets are on the Tron platform. The largest crypto exchange in Iran, Nobitex, has been guiding users to sidestep sanctions by routing USDT through intermediary addresses. This move came just two days after Tether, Coinbase, and OKX seized a fraud-linked address.
Analysis of Tether's Actions
Amid the wallet freezes, data indicates a sudden drop in Iran’s Bitcoin mining output. Critics highlight that Tether’s previous tolerance of Iranian money flows raises questions, particularly as Tron remains the primary route for USDT in Iran. The recent actions of Tether also draw scrutiny regarding founder Justin Sun's ties with U.S. political figures.
Tether's actions regarding the expansion into Bitcoin mining and wallet freezing reveal significant aspects of their strategy and response to global financial challenges.
