TikTok, a prominent short-form video platform, has introduced its Global Youth Council. The council, consisting of 15 teenagers aged between 15 and 18 from different regions worldwide, aims to bring about significant changes in online platforms and incorporate young perspectives into TikTok's decision-making processes.
In collaboration with Praesidio Safeguarding, the establishment of this council aligns with recent global research conducted by YouGov, indicating that the youth strongly desire more collaboration opportunities and influence over their online experiences. An important aspect is that this council is inclusive of teenagers from Africa, making it a groundbreaking initiative in the tech industry.
The first meeting of the council took place in December 2023, followed by a second session in February 2024, where CEO Shou Chew also participated. During these sessions, the teenagers provided feedback on the redesign of TikTok's Youth Portal and sought clarification on reporting and blocking procedures.
The Youth Council's key focus areas for the upcoming year include teen well-being and inclusion, ensuring that TikTok remains a secure and welcoming platform. By prominently featuring African teenagers, this initiative highlights TikTok's commitment to diversity and engagement with the next generation. The involvement of young voices in shaping digital platforms is crucial for a positive online experience and reflects a step towards ensuring the active participation of teenagers in online spaces.
