Ukrainian Resident Sentenced to 13 Years in American Court for Revil Ransomware Offenses

May 2, 2024

The recent ruling by a Texas Court saw Ukrainian national Yaroslav Vasinskyi handed a prison sentence for his involvement in ransomware attacks linked to the REvil hacking group, based in Russia. The landmark sentencing, which happened on Wednesday, highlights a significant step in the global fight against cybercrime.

Court Orders $16 Million Restitution

Vasinskyi, a 24-year-old individual who was extradited to the US from Poland in 2022, admitted to charges of fraud conspiracy, money laundering, and computer harm in the same year. Along with serving a prison term, he has been directed to pay back $16 million for his role in more than 2500 ransomware attacks.

Assistant AG Nicole Argentieri from the Attorney General's office strongly condemned Vasinskyi's actions, accusing him and his associates of hacking into numerous computers worldwide, encrypting them with ransomware, and demanding over $700 million in ransom payments with threats of data exposure.

Revil's Notable Target - Kaseya

REvil, also known as Sodinokibi, gained notoriety for targeting prominent companies and organizations. One of their main victims was Kaseya, a firm that provides IT services to around 40,000 organizations globally. The attack on Kaseya led to the shutdown of a major Swedish grocery chain, affecting businesses in 17 different countries, ranging from pharmacies to gas stations to kindergartens.

The arrest of Vasinskyi in Poland was part of coordinated international efforts to prevent ransomware attacks and tackle cybercriminals like REvil. The dismantling of REvil in January 2022 marked a pivotal moment in the fight against ransomware and cybercrimes on a global scale, as announced by the US.

The conviction of Yaroslav Vasinskyi serves as a stern warning to cybercriminals worldwide, highlighting the determination of law enforcement authorities to prosecute individuals who engage in malicious activities causing significant financial and operational damages to victims.
