More than 210,000 BTC are under the control of the US government

Mar 16, 2024

The United States government owns a significant amount of bitcoins, exceeding 210,000 BTC, making it one of the largest holders of this cryptocurrency globally. Since July 2023, official figures have not sold these assets. In February, 15,085 BTC were transferred, seized after the hack of the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange. According to analysts' estimates, the US government holds 210,392 BTC, worth $14.42 billion. This wealth has increased by 2.4 times compared to the initial value, thanks to the rise in the price of bitcoin.

An interesting fact is that, in addition to bitcoins, a significant amount of other cryptocurrencies is also stored in the US government's wallet, including 50,147 ETH, 10.14 million USDC, 5.36 million DAI, and 2.27 million USDT. In March 2023, bitcoins confiscated from the Silk Road hacker were transferred to Coinbase, and in April of the same year, the government sold 9861 BTC. In January 2024, it was announced the intention to sell a portion of the cryptocurrency related to the darknet marketplace case, totaling 2934 BTC.

This information underscores the significant influence of the United States government on the cryptocurrency market and its role as one of the largest holders of bitcoin in the world.
