The developer of Axie Infinity is introducing Japanese Web2 games to the Ronin blockchain

Nov 2, 2023

On November 2, Sky Mavis, the developer behind the popular NFT game Axie Infinity centered around monster battles, announced a partnership with the Korean gaming studio Act Games. This collaboration aims to bring various Japanese video game franchises to the Ronin blockchain, which is native to Axie Infinity.

According to an email shared with Cointelegraph, the partnership's first step involves migrating the game Zoids Wild Arena to the Ronin blockchain. Zoids Wild Arena is inspired by the renowned anime series created by Japan's largest toy manufacturer, Tomy. The anime series was first introduced by Tomy in 1983 as a line of plastic model figures. Other beloved franchises set to make the move to Ronin include Hello Kitty, Aggretsuko, and Bubble Bobble.

Trung Nguyen, the CEO and Co-founder of Sky Mavis, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, "Act Games excels at expanding iconic IPs, transcending demographics, and enhancing player engagement. This alliance will allow us to combine our web3 learnings and expertise with nostalgic IP backed by a pre-existing core fanbase." As part of the initial incentives, users who migrate to a Ronin wallet to play the game will receive Zoids NFTs and a token drop.

Act Games has developed four arcade-style games since 2019, amassing $6.4 million in net sales and 3 million downloads.

Axie Infinity, created by Sky Mavis, has achieved significant success, with $4.2 billion in NFT sales volume since its inception, millions of daily active users during its peak, and $1.3 billion in revenue. The Ronin blockchain, powered by the Ethereum Virtual Machine, is a prominent player in the NFT sales transaction space, second only to Ethereum itself.

Sky Mavis is currently headquartered in Vietnam and Singapore and has secured notable funding from investors such as Andreessen Horowitz, Paradigm, Libertus, Mark Cuban, and Binance.
